WEEKLY UPDATE
June 23rd marked the half-way point of the Monday night coed summer season. With week #5 now in the books, The Better Squires and Ready To Duo both have a 3W-0L-1OTL record and sit at the top of the standings with 7 points. But there are still 5 more regular-season games left, so top stop is in reach for most teams!
RECAPS
The Better Squires (TBS) vs Hintonburgers (HB)
It looked like TBS mixed up their offensive lines tonight and paired Heather Patterson with Matt Jahn and Marcus Noel with Jason Young. These new duos gave great results! TBS came out very strong in the first half, scoring 5 unanswered goals. HB had a tall task for the second period to get themselves back into this game. And unfortunately for them, TBS does not give many scoring chances, being the team that allows the least number of shots on net and the least number of goals. It took more than 30 minutes of play for HB to finally break Jeff Squires. Andrew Borley got that one with the help of Steven Aeng. But that would be the only shot that would get pass Jeff this game. TBS replied by adding 2 more goals to cap it off and won 7-1. Matt Jahn led his team in scoring with 2G, 1A, a season-high performance. And despite not getting herself on the scoresheet, Elian Al-Kadri played a solid game on defense for TBS, repeatedly executing little plays that transitioned into big momentum offensively.
TBS – Jeff Squires – 28 shots
HB – Tony Natoli – 48 shots
The Natural Disasters (TND) vs (Byron Beauties)
The second game of the night displayed competitive and entertaining ball hockey. The score was tied at 1 a piece with less than 5 minutes to play in the first. BB’s Nicky Soucy treated us to a beauty goal by beating the netminder glove-side with a clean shot. It looked like BB was taking a 2-1 advantage into the break. Not quite! In true buzzer-beater fashion, Matt Rosenthal surprised the goalie with a low shot to tie the game up with only 2 seconds left on the clock. In the second half, BB kept up the offensive pressure and out gunned TND 26-10 in shots. Over the course of the season, we’ve become use to seeing how valuable Ellen Wardroper is to her team’s defensive game. She stepped it up to another level tonight defending against BB’s relentless attacks. (And to top it off, she even finished the night with 2A.) Both teams exchange a few goals to make it 4-4. With only 1 minute left to play, it only seemed fitting to see these teams duke it out in shootouts. And that’s when Aidan Kaplan capitalized on a turn-over to give TND the 5-4 edge. He’s now on a 4-game scoring streak. Goalie Travis Guay stayed focused until the very end to secure his team the win.
TND – Travis Guay – 51 shots
BB – Michael Mirdamadi – 27 shots
Ready To Duo (RTD) vs Team #3 (T3)
Before the start of the game, both teams had an identical record of 2W-0L-1OTL. So, the winner of this game would find themselves taking a lead in the standings. We had to wait several minutes before seeing some action on the scoreboard. It was T3’s Warren Gies that striked first, finishing off a nice set-up from Ellen Wardroper. T3 got the next goal as well and it looked like they were sailing into the break with a 2-0 lead. But Ethan Dagenais, assisted by Dave Ash, got RTD on the board to make it 2-1. The ball dropped to start the second half. RTD was settling into the o-zone. Rob Hunter broke up their play, quickly switched gears into offense and got T3’s 3rd goal of the night. Although RTD was playing a good game, it seemed as if they weren’t fully dialed into their usual groove. Rachel Bolzon found Tim Squires hanging out in front of the net and he finished the play with a nice goal to make it 3-2. From that point on, RTD took their game to next level and started executing their plays with speed and precision. They went on to take a 5-3 lead, even scoring short handed. Ethan Dagenais had himself a great game with 2G, 1A. T3 got the last goal of the game, seconds before the buzzer. RTD won 5-4.
RTD – Jeff Squires (spare) – 41 shots
T3 – Nick Jazz – 41 shots
Super Snipers (SS) vs Jeffassaurus Rex (JR)
The game started off as a JR takeover. They quickly out shot SS 7-0 in the first minutes of play. However, period #1 was all Paul Bourgeois and Patrick Michaud on the scoresheet: PB got 3G, 1A and PM had 1G, 2A. Goalie Travis Guay (spare) stopped all 32 shots JR fired at his net. SS had a 4-0 lead at the intermission. Having no results to show for their constant pressure, JR didn’t get discouraged. They kept it up and finally got rewarded early in the second period. Jeff Murphy tipped Austin Perron’s shot to beat TG. The JM-AP duo went back to work moments later. This time, JM won a face off to AP who released a sharp shot and cut their deficient 4-2. JR had 2 PP in this period. On each occasion, they were successful thanks to Elliot James who set up his teammates for the goals. With 2 minutes left to play the score was 5-4 SS. John Gravel and Danielle Beverdam were crucial for SS on defense. They helped protect their lead and resisted JR’s heavy pressure until the very end. SS celebrated a hard-fought 5-4 win.
SS – Travis Guay (spare) – 60 shots
JR – Nuur Sadek – 33 shots
